Abstract

The study examines the special connections between volunteering and professional development in the public education sector through the methodological practice of the Hungarian Association of Community Builders (KözösÉrték Egyesület). The central thesis of this paper is that volunteering in public education can be interpreted as a "third pillar", which - at the intersection of initiative and action - can become a sustainable resource for community development alongside structured mentoring. The theoretical foundation defines the methodology of Sight-seeking Journeys and Sight-points , as well as the community education mentoring system developed by the organization. The study points out that the mentor, as a catalyst, does not only transfer professional knowledge but also helps prevent career abandonment and strengthen professional identity. Two case studies provide practical relevance. The example of the Közkincs mentor group in Kecskemét demonstrates the synergies of the partner network of small-town professionals and volunteers. In analyzing the youth community development process in Tata, the authors use Tuckman's group dynamics model and Roger Hart's participation ladder to shed light on how the "mandatory" nature of School Community Service (SCS) can be transformed into a genuine, intrinsically motivated voluntary commitment and joint decision-making. The summary states that the mentoring cycles that will be completed in 2026 offer a sustainable model in which conscious competence development does not only significantly improve the individual life path, but also the retention power and ability to act of the settlements.
